4th Quartely Competition

There was a good turn out to hear Jack Byatt the judge, give his verdicts on the numerous entries for the last quarterly competition of the year. This was the first time Jack has visited us and we found his comments both interesting and edifying. Congratulations go to Tom Pearson for his winning print, a portrait of a chinese man; also congratulations to Max Elliott for his projected image Serene seen below.

This year the subject was ‘composition’ and there were a good many prints and digital images entered. Each of the entries were discussed by the assembled members and the eventual winners were chosen.
Congratulations go to Jeni Harney for gaining the first three places in the print competion with her Mirror mirror on the wall (1st),Hurricane (2nd) and Dahlia (3rd); the digital image honours go to Ian Boys Rebecca(1st), Max Elliott Serene (2nd) and Building pattern (3rd) – congrats to you both!

L&CPU mono portfolio

The latest L&CPU mono print portfolio was on show to members this week and the vast majority of club members took the opportunity to see what members of other clubs were producing. Everyone agreed that it was an interesting and edifying evening!

Another well-attended meeting; the club's lighting equipment was utilized to good effect photographing Joanna - there should have been two models, but unfortunately Georgina was taken ill in the morning and was unable to be there. However, the flash units worked overtime and no doubt we shall see many images of Joanna in upcoming competitions.

Members' critique night

At this well-attended meeting members each brought a digital image which was projected and suggestions were made by those present as how to manipulate it to produce different effects. The evening was judged to be a success.

Lightroom workflow with Jeni and sharpening with Sid

The first meeting of November was split into two separate demonstrations. First, Jeni took the stage to show us her workflow using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. After the break Sid demonstrated several ways of digitally sharpening an image in CS4. I'm sure that everyone learnt something to their advantage by the end of the evening.

Former member Steve Howard LRPS returned for the evening to give us a talk on his photography, illustrated by many superb prints, mostly his own, but several produced by his wife Fay. Once again an entertaining meeting.

Members printed, in some cases after some manipulation in Photoshop and mounted images in preparation for upcoming competitions; thought was given to next year's L&CPU competition entry.

Next year's plans

The evening was devoted to planning the calendar for next year. A spread sheet detailing all the Mondays in 2011 was projected onto a screen and during the course of the evening each empty space was filled in with suggestions from the floor. It was left for the committee to 'put the flesh on the bones' within the next few weeks. Members can look forward to an interesting and comprehensive programme next year.

The AGM saw the re-election of the officers and committee. After a short formal meeting the rest of the evening was devoted to a discussion on what ideas the members had for developing the Club.

What happens to all the photos we take? After a short demonstration of Pictures to Exe software members were split into two teams and each produced a short audio visual presentation from the digital files that they had been asked to bring to the meeting. Whilst the results wouldn't win an international competition the evening was a decided success. Members went home to consider the use of the software as a way of showing their photos.

Allotments re-visited

Members paid a second visit to the allotments first visited in May. Once again the weather was agreeable and the Allotment society members played the perfect hosts. Some fine photographs were subsequently presented to the Allotment society to adorn the walls of their meeting room.

Visit to Salford Quays

Members braved the rain to visit Salford Quays and spent a profitable few hours dodging the heavy downpours and keeping their gear dry.

Lighting night with Alan Towse

Alan Towse again visited the club and brought two models to help him demonstrate portrait lighting. Members were encouraged to take his advice and many successful photographs were taken of the girls in various poses and outfits.

Steve Howard made a return visit to once again judged our competition, for which we thank him. We appreciated and valued Steve's comments on all the entries and congratulations go to Jeni Harney for winning the projected images competition with her entry "Leprechauns" and Sid Heald for coming second with "Eye Contact". Jeni also won first and second places in the print competition with "The Ugly Fairy" and "Silver Birch Sunset" respectively.

Local allotment photo shoot

More than twenty club members spent an enjoyable and productive evening at a local allotment society. Those who were there early were able to take advantage of the available light and interesting surroundings to take some prize-winning shots. Later tripods were out in force as the light began to fade. The evening was declared a success and thanks were expressed to the allotment society members who not only made us welcome but also provided cups of tea and coffee.

A sunny afternoon gave members the opportunity to take numerous action shots on their visit to Aldwinians Rugby Club yesterday. The afternoon was voted a success, which is hoped to be repeated next season; thanks to Aldwinians players and officials for making the visit possible.

Unfortunately the game scheduled for kick-off at 1.00pm on Saturday 10th April has been cancelled; however the later game is still to go ahead.
Therefore members should meet at Stanley Square at 2.30pm AND NOT 12.30pm.

Opportunity for action shots

Oval shaped balls will be in SPC members' viewfinders when they visit Aldwinians Rugby Club on Saturday 10th April, giving rise to many action shot possibilities.
Two games are scheduled that day, the first kick-off at 1.00pm is a match featuring 'seniors' followed at 3.00pm by a regular fixture.
Members should meet at Stanley Square at 12.30pm; however those intending traveling independently should visit Aldwinians RUFC for directions.

Entries for 2010 L&CPU competition

Competition Secretary David Oliver reports that there is room for more digital images in the 'Nature' section of the Club's entry for this year's L&CPU competition. David advises that the very latest date for handing in entries will be Monday 12th April; he is unable to accept anything after that date! So please ensure that you give him your prints (suitably mounted) and digital files (correctly sized) before then.

Tower Bridge London by John Newton
Bramhall judge Andrew Lewinski ARPS was faced with more than twenty prints and in excess of thirty digital images when he once again came to Stalybridge; this time he chose John Newton's 'Tower Bridge' as the winner of the digital images and Jeni Harney's snow scene as the winning print.
Well done to the winners and a hearty 'thank you' from the club members to Andrew.
